American Gothic Neon — A New Look at a Classic

Back in my NYC advertising days, I met a talented creative director by the name of David. We stayed in touch when I moved out West… and, in following my career, he was kind enough to introduce me to his good Jackson Hole-based friends — the Faupel’s.

Matt, Julie and yours truly struck-up a conversation… and decided to collaborate on a commission. We wanted something that embraced classic Americana, but with a contemporary touch. So, what better to create than a neon version of Grant Wood’s “American Gothic”?

My first trip outside of the US was to London… my brother, Tim, lived there… this city holds a special place in my heart. A Collage Portrait of Doctor Robert I. Schattner

I had the great honor of being commissioned by the Robert I. Schattner Foundation, to create a collage painting of the late Doctor Robert I. Schattner. From humble beginnings, Dr. Schattner went on to invent, and sell, Chloraseptic. From there, he carefully charted stocks, and steadily built a portfolio that ultimately made him a 51% shareholder of Hancock, and one of the wealthiest people in Washington. Today, the University of Pennsylvania’s Dental School bears his name.

Dr. Schattner’s journey is explored in this painting.

Kenneth Francis Begasse Collage Painting by Borbay

I had the great honor of painting the late Kenneth Francis Begasse’s portrait. Affectionately known as “Senior”, the piece was commissioned by Michael Sanzen, partner at Concentric Healthcare Experience, as a gift for Senior’s family. The work and process were transformed into a beautiful mural, which was unveiled at their TriBeCa headquarters last week.
