The Virginian Jackson Hole, a Borbay Neon Painting

The Virginian Lodge Jackson Hole Painting by Borbay

Introducing, my latest neon painting — ‘The Virginian’ — an iconic beacon in the Jackson Hole skyline. But why The Virg? Why now?

Well, you may have heard the property is on sale for a crisp $60,000,000 (the painting will be available for slightly less)… and, as it happens, the broker is friend, collector and patient golf partner — Greg Prugh. So, I figured the timing was perfect.

Care to see this beauty come together in 46 seconds? Look no further than the link above… set to the aptly named track, “Borbay 2.0”, courtesy of my guys Nelson and Ahmed.

Borbay’s 2018 — A True Banger For The Books

Borbay 2018 Year in Review

2018, you sly fox. While all-up in you, I traveled the world, took two trips to Vegas, painted like mad, was Artist-in-Residence at Teton Springs, golfed 100 rounds, played lots of hockey, auctioneer-ed a charity event; and even officiated my first wedding!

With record sales, amazing collectors, great friends and a loving family at my side — I couldn’t be more grateful. And now… let’s break you down, and drop it like it’s hot — 2018.

A Tale of Two Sahara’s, ala Vintage Las Vegas

Sahara Las Vegas Collage Painting by Borbay

I ran my first (and only) marathon in Las Vegas. We celebrated Erin’s 30th Birthday in Sin City. Since 2011, I’ve painted in the land of neon seven times.

So, you can imagine the stoke factor, when Kevin Barry Fine Art commissioned me to paint The Sahara — two times!

A Portrait Of Trevor Gillies

Trevor Gillies Portrait by Borbay

My neighborhood on Long Island was fiercely divided. Neighbors took sides, and this animus bled into the streets… during roller hockey games. You were either an Islanders fan, or a Rangers fan — never both. I was, and remain, the former. During the 2009 season, a familiar name hit the ice — Trevor Gillies. He quickly became a fan favorite, and remained that way, even when the Coliseum faithful found out, he wasn’t, in fact, related to the legend — Clark Gillies.

How did this portrait come to be? During our first summer in Teton Valley, we attended a charity event at Teton Springs. There, I met a gentleman named Michael. As it happens, Erin and I  found out the gender of our third child that evening, so Michael took me to the clubhouse for a celebratory shot of Jam-O. During our chat, I confessed my love for hockey, and he revealed the name of his brother-in-law — Trevor Gillies. And so, the wheels were set in motion…

Here is a look at the entire creative process, in time lapse. The track, Powerful Vibes (feat. Dolio The Sleuth, GR Stone & Stewie), has been provided by MH the Verb… run, don’t walk, to his website and buy his new album — Afronaut… yes, I painted the album cover.

And now… on to the process, with more about the story behind this new painting.

Welcome To Twin Peaks Neon Sign Painting

Welcome To Twin Peaks Painting Neon by Borbay

Welcome To Twin Peaks, fire, walk with neon… I’ve long admired the work of David Lynch, from film to sound to canvas. A consummate original, and architect of universes, I strove to capture a symbol of the great Lynch/David Frost series in a new light. Neon, to be specific.

Here is how the entire painting came together, captured in a one minute time lapse.

If you find yourself in Jackson, be sure to visit the Mormon Row Historic District — it’s spectacular! The John Moulton ranch features this incredible pink house with views you can’t buy (literally, it’s historically preserved). So, you see, I had to paint it.

Art Barre Soirée At Ski Barre, March 4, 2017, 7-9PM

Art Barre Soiree Poster March 4 2017 Jackson Hole

It began as… the sun was setting behind the Teton Mountains. A late summer chill descended upon the crowd, patiently witnessing a gentleman exhume, skin and dismember a lamb.  Soon, the performance became a barbecue. Huddling around a large fire spit, I turned to my left, extended a hand and introduced myself to David and Michelle Quinn. We discussed art, life and promised to continue the conversation over dinner. As our friendship blossomed, our circle expanded to include Avi Kantor, David’s partner, and Rachel Kantor, the owner of Ski Barre. On a freezing night in Victor, Idaho — we decided to collaborate on something special — a happening of our own. And so…

The Certior Group and Ski Barre invite you to… join us, on Saturday, March 4th, from 7-9pm at Ski Barre, for the first, one-night-only Art Barre Soirée. Peruse Borbay’s electric artwork, sip a signature Jackson Hole Still Works cocktail and mingle with fabulous people in Ski Barre’s breathtaking new studio.

2016 Year In Review — Western Destiny Realized

Borbay Self Portrait Painting 2016

If you would have told me, “man, you’ll be a married father-of-two, living in Idaho by your 36th year”… I’d have replied, “whatcha talkin’ bout”, and called you Willis.

Fittingly, 2016 began with my second self portrait — capturing this reality.  Artist selfies take longer.

The Neon Guggenheim, aka Guggenheim #8 of 20

Neon Guggenheim Painting by Borbay

In the summer of 2009, I painted the Guggenheim on a 30″X30″ canvas and practically sold it on the street. In 2010, I longed to paint the Gugg once more… but it felt wrong. Opportunistic.

Unless? I wondered… if I made a more serious commitment. And with that, I decided to paint a 30″X30″ Guggenheim, each summer, for 20 years. Today, I’m proud to share Guggenheim #8 — “The Neon Guggenheim”. Fittingly, this painting will debut at The National Arts Club in November, for the Accessible Art Fair.

MH the Verb sent me “Good Morning”, and, well, I couldn’t cut a single beat… so this video is long, strong and down to put the acrylic on. From MH, “‘Good Morning‘ perfectly exemplifies the collaborative style ArtHouse95 is all about.  I produced the track featuring live bass from engineer, Dave Humes and layered drums. It’s pure Hip Hop… digging crates for the perfect sample, chopping the jazzy groove, and linking with two of Philadelphia’s most lyrical emcees – Drusef and Mic Stew. We wrote the song during a cloudy studio session a couple years ago while reflecting on our daily grind and ambition as artists. The homie, Kuf Knotz even had to make a guest appearance at the end.  Overall, when the beat drops after the intro, you can feel the energy build… I just can’t wait for people to hear what comes next.

Enjoy… and do read on for an unusual painting recap.
