Atomic Liquors is the oldest freestanding bar in Las Vegas, with liquor license #0001. Back in the day, folks would head up to the roof with a cocktail to watch the nukes go boom in the horizon about 50 miles away. That seems dangerous to me, but I carry a cell phone in my front pocket — so what do I know? This baby has been featured in scores of movies… and is flat out one of the best damn neon signs in the world.
Here is a snap of the glorious sign, lit-up beautifully, on a warm Vegas night.
Visiting some galleries in late 2012 with his Wife Marla, a gentleman by the name of Robert Oringer who never considered himself an art guy/collector, had an epiphany moment. He saw some collage art and it got him thinking about the crazy collection of NY Post issues he had amassed over decades— piles of NY Posts meticulously protected and stored away without any objective in mind. So he went to Google and began to search the Net for collage artists, one perhaps to convert his collection into art when he stumbled upon another Post fanatic… yours truly.
When I was a kid, I built a proton pack out of Construx, and fired vigorously into the clouds on an overcast day. My inspiration? Dr. Peter Venkman… a scientist that didn’t suck. So, 28 years later, I paid homage to one of my favorite characters (and actor) with this painting: Dr. Bill Venkman.

Certain cinematic characters grab you, and resonate for years. Daniel Day Lewis‘ brilliant turn as Bill The Butcher in Gangs of New York is one of them.
If I am in the studio painting, I’m watching movies — all day long. One of my all-time favorites is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas… as it happens, so I decided to capture both Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson as one. Both of these creative gents have brought me a great deal of enjoyment, so I figured why not ride this strange torpedo out to the end?
