A Portrait of Raymond Carnes

So often, the phone rings… and I wince. Unknown caller. Spam risk.

Not this time. The caller ID read “Trevor”. I was more than delighted to pick up for my friend, portrait subject and New York Islanders legend. Trevor was calling to introduce me to his close friend, Ray Carnes, Co-Founder of Recteq — purveyor of the best damn grills on the planet. We struck up a conversation… a chat that marked the beginning of this 30″X30″ collage-painting portrait.

American Gothic Neon — A New Look at a Classic

Back in my NYC advertising days, I met a talented creative director by the name of David. We stayed in touch when I moved out West… and, in following my career, he was kind enough to introduce me to his good Jackson Hole-based friends — the Faupel’s.

Matt, Julie and yours truly struck-up a conversation… and decided to collaborate on a commission. We wanted something that embraced classic Americana, but with a contemporary touch. So, what better to create than a neon version of Grant Wood’s “American Gothic”?

Stephens Family Portrait Series — Bob, Kelly, Madison and Graham

Back in 2010… I met a Bob and Kelly Stephens and their pup Oz while I was painting in front of The Guggenheim. We became fast friends… Bob and I even played some hockey together (he went to Cornell, you might have heard of it? It’s in the Ivy League).

In 2013… they fell in love with my 5th Guggenheim, and added it to their collection. Eventually, as you all know (by now), our family moved to Idaho… but that didn’t stop us from being in touch. One day, Bob contacted me, wondering about creating a family portrait

Zabar’s Painting by Borbay

Zabars New York City Painting by Borbay

I may live in Idaho, but New York City still courses through my veins. So, you can imagine my immense pleasure when I was commissioned to paint Zabar’s — an Upper West Side icon. I can still taste the coffee and black-and-white’s in my mind (and thanks to Goldbelly, literally)…

Felix Chevrolet Neon Painting by Borbay

Felix Chevrolet Los Angeles Painting by Borbay

If you find yourself in Los Angeles, head over to 3330 S Figueroa Street at dusk… look upward… and soak in Felix Chevrolet’s majestic sign. If the movies have taught us anything, it’s this — product placements are everywhere. E.T. could have desired M&M’s… but Mars dropped the ball, and he got them Reeses. For headaches, Wayne Campbell prefers Nuprin, for they are, “little, yellow, different.”

Yes, the 80’s, 90’s and today… era’s so ripe with brand crossovers — it has become the norm. Now — turn back the clock to 1921, and imagine how innovative the collaboration between Pat Sullivan’s cartoon cat Felix, and Winslow B. Felix‘s car dealership was? Brilliant. And so, please join me on a creation adventure, shared through pictures and prose.
