Plein Air | Robert F Kennedy Bridge (AKA TriBoro Bridge) Late Evening

Robert F Kennedy Bridge Painting

Nothing beats a quick, fresh and loose plein air painting session on a Saturday. Setting up on my roof deck, I decided to capture the TriBoro Bridge (renamed the Robert F Kennedy Bridge in a fit of fine fiscal judgment by the perpetually frisky, former fat kat of Albany.) My objective was to keep it loose, explore and play with the paint without an preconceived notions.

Painting Process | Jefferson Memorial, Washington DC

Jefferson Memorial Borbay

On Friday, I spent the day painting the Thomas Jefferson Memorial from the Tidal Basin. Visiting my brother, Tim, who is a Junior at American University, I enjoyed a windy day of plein air in our nations capital. My intent was to capture the Cherry Blossoms, but they were swept away in a violent storm the day before I set up shop.

Hancock Center Trump

Sometimes everything comes together, and who doesn’t love that. Putting out an APB for new painting locations on Facebook, my good friend Conor McClintock and his lady Crystal offered up their downtown Chicago Carriage House lodgings – drinks included. With a place to stay lined up, I managed to secure a plane ticket for $110 – bully.

Painting Process | Bar Brera, Milan

Bar Brera

My final day in Milan lead me back to Brera, to capture it’s namesake Bar. Perhaps the similarities between Borbay and BarBrera drew me to this location? Or perhaps it was the doppio espresso and use of their facilities? Unfortunate fact of plain air painting in the city, if you choose a spot with no foot traffic or facilities, you are asking for trouble.

Via Rovello Milan Borbay

Based on a street recommendation, I lugged the ol’ easel back to Brera. After nearly two hours of searching, I came upon exactly the street I was looking for – Via Rovello. With a convergence point at the end of the road, I couldn’t resist and thus got to work.

Painting Process | Chrysler Building, 39th Street

Final Chrysler Building
Manhattan’s Art Deco masterpiece, the Chrysler Building, has been my favorite hi-rise for well over seven years and three months. After scouring Midtown for a view capturing the new and old, I set up shop in front of the W Hotel on East 39th Street, between Park and Lexington. A full painting process after the jump.
