During week five as Four Seasons Jackson Hole’s Artist-In-Residence, I revisited an old friend — the Antler Motel.

Kicking things off with a Highwater cocktail and a quick china marker sketch. I wanted the painting to feel loose, so I drew as quickly as I could… three minutes or so.
Unlike a studio painting, I don’t have the luxury of a careful underpainting… so I simply dive in and begin painting the letters.
I hit the shadows with some deep blue around ANTLER, but that was wrong, so I back-tracked, and went from Cadmium Red to dark, beginning by outlining MOTEL. This was the right approach.
Sometimes you find yourself in a deep trance… this painting was one of those instances. Thus, I got busy painting and didn’t take a picture until I was nearly there. The tubes make a neon. Many strokes on this painting, particularly around the letters and on the wood are thick… impasto style.
And boom! Here it is. You can take home the original to experience the tonal subtleties. Oh… and here is the first Antler Painting, created in my Teton Village studio back in 2015:
