The Brothers Hyde Painting Process

When I first rolled a 26-foot-Uhaul towing our SUV into Teton Valley, I had no idea what the future would bring. As it happens… the future was bright and beautiful. We found ourselves living in a fabulous community, now known as The Bronze Buffalo Ranch at Teton Springs. Here, we met life-long friends, became addicted to golf and discovered a family in the Tetons.

Two of the amazing folks we met were the Hyde Brothers — Justin and Cody. They warmly accepted us into their club and lives, and for that — we are forever grateful. To express our thanks, I collaborated with Lexi and Jenny to create a painting of the brothers Hyde… on their horses… soaking-in this glorious kingdom. We began with this photograph… but, I thought black-and-white would prove timeless.

As is often the case… this piece began with a warm under-painting. Next? I began to mix Titanium White and Mars Black (the same palette as The Silver Guggenheim) to establish the Cowboys and their trusty steeds.

From there, I established the Tetons, and the sky. My process is one of deconstruction, and re-construction.

With the Tetons established, I decided to lay out the foreground, and then begin to refine from top-to-bottom. This is pragmatic from a creation standpoint… as paint will tend to follow gravity.

With everything laid out… and some enigmatic brush strokes in the foreground, it was time to refine. So, I began with Cody and Justin.

As I worked the paint around the horses… the only thing remaining was the foreground, which I wanted to have plenty of texture to establish distance. With this, the painting was complete, “The Brothers Hyde” was signed and prepared for an incredible unveiling at The Club.

I had the pleasure of unveiling the painting alongside Justin… did I accidentally knock it over when I removed the covering? Yes… yes I did.

The Hyde’s… Kevin, Janice and Justin.
