‘The Alpha’ — A Golden Eagle Painting by Borbay

Golden Eagle Painting by Borbay

The story goes… a Bald Eagle swooped into the lagoon on the 9th at Teton Springs, snagging a big ol’ fish. Euphoria… until, our Golden Eagle pounces and robs the scaled delight. Battered, our nation’s symbol sulked into the woods (to shag my long-lost Pro VX).

And so, when speaking with Tony and Carrie Snoey about the perfect symbol for our slice of Eastern Idaho heaven? The Golden Eagle was it. Black and white brings that fitting touch of noir. Oh, did I mention — this painting is four by eight feet?

It’s not the type of eagle, it’s the size of the canvas. Cue Michael Gary Scott.

Golden Eagle Teton Springs

This is the Golden Eagle of Teton Springs lore… from afar, it looked like a bear cub huddled on the lush green fairway.

When I offered up a snosage and a beer, The Alpha took off… and, friends, this was an iPhone photo… no justice to either the size, or majesty of this beauty.

Orange you glad to paint the background, while an eagle silhouette is blushing red… and Vega winks away.

As you may have noticed in the process video… I was painting the background twice simultaneously. There are seven layers of paint on every inch of canvas… as I approach (scream toward) middle age — fidelity is on my mind.

Now for some fun… nailing down the highlights and secondary tones. I decided to paint from a payne’s grey base… hand-mixed, of course.

Working those greys… and here, I realized I need to get my fine gradient on… the prestige phase, if you will.

You can click on ‘The Alpha’ (thank you Tony and D-Sands for the name) for a closer look… after all, 32-square-feet of art cannot be properly shared through a few thousand pixels.

This baby will be residing in Teton Springs… that is, until someone beckons Alph elsewhere.
