Painting Process | Bryant Park Grill for The Garrick’s

Bryant Park Grill Painting by Borbay

My brother’s best friend of 20 years got married this weekend, so I decided to commemorate this special moment with a painting of The Bryant Park Grill. There, Chris and Ann exchanged vows — and I, amongst many other guests, enjoyed several adult beverages. Understatement.

A quick sketch over the plastic wrap. It always feels like a special phase, until you rip off the ghost and hit the canvas.

Starting out with a quick red and yellow wash to identify the major planes. Not airplanes mind you.

Some bright yellow, adding in an introductory round of highlights.

Red, Yellow, Blue. Primary triad. You can mix any color with these three plus white. These colors really create a running-into-your-ex-wife-on-a-date-with-your-current-lady type of tension.

Now with the green and orange, two of the secondary triad. I was focusing on heavy paint application and varied mark-making. When you apply heavy body acrylic impasto style, it almost looks like oils.

A light purple, pretty much sucking the light out of the painting. It’s the backward swell before the giant wave.

Oh, now there’s a lush green. Oh, so lush.

OK, this painting, if finished here, might be worse than the seizure inducing robots.

And a final, with some tweaks to the details, brighter yellows and a few splashes of violet. Here’s to a happy and healthy union Chris and Ann! My brother Dan gave the best mans speech by the way, he was outstanding.

This is so cool. And Dan’s speech was outstanding, of course, he’s talented like his brothers..

I would love to talk to you about possibly commissioning a painting…don’t laugh now….I want Citifield.
Let me know what you think about that and how much it would be..

    Thanks
