Warhol Portrait Auctions for 38.4MM: Market Perspective For Collectors
New York, NY – May 12, 2011 — Last night, a four panel (40″X32″ collectively) self-portrait of Andy Warhol auctioned at Christie’s for $38.4 Million Dollars. This, of course, is an impressive sum for a piece of art. In fact, to put this in perspective, here is a Warholian chart outlining what you could get for this one painting (click image to enlarge):

As seen in BlackBook and Max’s Kansas City, Atelier Klimat‘s opening reception began at 7PM and carried on late into a stormy Manhattan evening that saw lightening strike the Empire State Building thrice. A terribly good-looking crowd braved said storm to soak up the art and atmosphere of Klimat, a premier East Village establishment.

It wasn’t until I threw down the paint that I realized this to be true. At the tail end of January, Ken Marquis hit me up about the landmark global artist reclamation project. In his words, “The project will involve one thousand and forty-one (1,041) artists worldwide. To date there are over nine hundred artists involved across 51 countries. This artist initiative is by far the largest undertaking of its kind.”
