Guggenheim #14 in my 20-Year-Guggenheim painting series has arrived. This iteration was inspired by the incomparable Verner Panton. Specfically?

Visiana 2… an incredible, futuristic interior. I was so drawn to Panton and, specifically, this work — when I was introduced to his cannon by friend and collector, Jennifer. It felt familiar…

Turns out… Erin sat inside this masterpiece on a day date back in 2007. When people ask me what I miss most about living in NYC? Simple… being able to walk to the Guggenheim and take in the masterpieces I aspire to hang alongside one day.

This work began with a simple drawing, and a dark background which was mixed with Pthalo Blue Green Shade and Cadmium Red Medium. The best dark shades are hand-mixed… it adds a layer of depth.

Each painting is an adventure. Typically, I begin with a warm underpainting… for this piece, I dove into the final layers from the first stroke. It was important to capture the warm interior to make the piece work.

In studying Visiana 2… I wondered if a pink-to-blue gradient would work on the exterior… at this stage, I realized it would not… so I pivoted.

When I discovered the blue gradient… everything fit. There was a curved sculpture on the roof of the Gugggenheim I’ve never painted… so this felt like the time. As it happens, I cannot find the creator of this beauty… if you know, please drop me a line.

And here is the final… Panton Guggenheim. Six years to go… we’ll see what 2023 brings.
When I began this series in 2009, 2029 felt like a sci-fi future. Now… I can see the finish. In my heart, completing Number 20 will feel like finishing a fifty-thousand page novel. I’ll miss this universe… but, hey? There’s always the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao… I’m down for a trip to Spain.
