Will ‘The Masters’ body of work become the next ‘Guggenheim Series‘? It’s the perfect marriage of art, performance (live streams) and my love of the game (six triples in my 2021 debut for a sterling 98).
Time will tell… for now? Let’s dig into the process of behind bad boy.
In November, a COVID-19-Delayed Masters tournament took place in the fall for the first time. I instantly felt compelled to capture it… the result? Golden Bell… so when the 2021 Masters arrived, I decided to follow Amen Corner to #13 — Azalea.
It all began with a deep red wash, and a quick sketch
And, per my previous Masters’ adventure — I live streamed the entire process (though, I did create the under-painting offline).
The first sesh heeded a quick, expressionist overlay. It is refreshing to create so freely, with large brushes and an open mind.
The next session was about nailing some shadows… and, really, outlining stones on a bridge.
A sense of place… however, the trees are the anchor… so it was time to get my Bob Ross on.
I’ve never been one to use a fan brush… now? I’ll always be your number one fan… brush.
The trees were huge… as were the shadows throughout. Clearly, the grounds at Augusta National are far better maintained than this mess… of course, it’s still early — so ignore that triple bogey on three.
It was time to add more tree tones, paint some Crazy Sky Swirlies (TM, Patent Pending), and refine me some grass.
Oh yes… some serious magenta. In the fall edition, I was heavy on the reds… this time? I wanted to channel the azalea’s on, well, Azalea.
As the players got their weekend game on… I decided to sculpt the grass, and add depth to the trees.
It’s all starting to make sense.
This was a mega-session… I was at it for two plus hours (viewers of the video above, be aware).
The checklist… a window into a Virgo’s madness. I spent a few hours staring at the work, both in-person, and on the computer… and this is what I noticed required refinement.
Ah, a classic double-header… the final touches in a two-part series.
And boom! Signed! Here’s a huge thank you to everyone who joined me for this four-day painting-adventure. It warms my heart to have company in the studio. Congratulations to Hideki Matsuyama on your historic win — total beauty.
I love it!!!!!! The trees…. and Matsuyama-son, a natural gentleman !
Thank you Gayle! Appreciate it, and agree… what a player. Have a great trip 🙏🏻
