My Dad, Steve Borbet, has dedicated his life to developing athletes and humans at BAY SHORE HS. To date, he has been inducted into The Armory National Track and Field Hall of Fame, Suffolk County, New York Hall of Fame, was named National Scholastic Athletics Foundation Coach of The Year, and, the Bay Shore track now bears his name.

My Dad’s biggest supporter, my Mom Kathie, commissioned this painting to celebrate a historic career. A big thank you to MH the Verb for the apropos soundtrack.

Knocking out the basic forms in red and orange.

Beginning with the sky and converging track lines.

Blocking out shadows and working on the drawing.

A nice green gradient of grass. In painting, your artistic license allows you to add/omit a few elements… in this case… cars in the parking lot, a few light poles and a net on the infield.

Getting the building laid out… it would take three passes to identify the correct color palette… the layers are a perfect metaphor for track and field.

And completed! It was an honor to create this painting for my family. The greatest satisfaction my Dad gets out of coaching comes from his athletes. Wherever we go, literally, in the world, we seem to hear, “Coach Borbet!”
Being a positive force in their lives has been reward enough. And, while he taught me to pursue my passion for passions sake, I’m thrilled to see his many years of hard work recognized. Thank you Bay Shore, The Armory, Suffolk County and The National Scholastic Foundation for honoring Steve Borbet.
Oh… and the numbers on the scoreboard… 79 = the year my folks were married; 2:58.0 = my Dad’s best 1200 meter split; 39 = the number of county titles (!!) my Dad’s team won at Bay Shore to date; 1:51 and 4:09 = my dads 880 and mile personal bests.

Another newsletter? You got that right. I'll honor and respect your inbox, as if it were my own. I endeavor to share everything happening at Borbay Studios & Gallery. No daily updates. No weekly updates. Simply a message, every month or two... updates on life, creativity, and the journey that began on July 2, 2009. Let's be in touch, as the first leg of my quest reaches completion in 2026. From a studio in my 600-foot Upper East Side apartment living room, to a museum collection. Oh, but friend, that is just the beginning. The road is long, and I am looking for cool, sophisticated company to navigate each challenging turn.
