2017 what a year! Our family grew by one, with the addition of our son Esser. I spent the summer painting in Teton Village, created many paintings and even went snowshoeing! It was major… let’s take it from the top, with a time warp back to January…
January began, as December ended… by sharing a painting created six months earlier. In this case? Four Winds… a 4-by-4-foot painting, now in a glorious collection over the hill.
I tried, and failed, to become a competent skate skier… Dad Bod didn’t much take to the snow…
But I did get back into ice hockey in a major way… enjoying many sessions at the glorious Kotler Arena.
Tonic, a new blog brought to you by Vice, asked me how I reformed my workaholic ways… above, a slender 24-year-old, putting in the hours at Trump Tower.
Mr. Mandela spent a short period of time in the studio, and was swiftly shipped up North to his new home.
Our new neighbor, we discovered, is a fan of trespassing.
Conor, Sarah and Teddy spent some time with the family! Conor and I go way back… it was a blast doing the big family thang.
Coraline learned to three wheel on her way to becoming four (!!).
At the end of 2016, I found myself back in Manhattan, wandering the streets and hitting up old haunts. The desire to paint Old Town‘s neon sign followed me back to Idaho…
Looking to get involved locally, I joined the Victor Placemakers committee… we built a snow park downtown… it was a hit.
My gorgeous bride, getting ready to bring our son into the world, with a kiss from lovely Vega.
We created a collaborative mural at Coraline’s school…
She was pleased with the result.
I donated a piece for The Art Association’s Whodunnit show… here I am, pictured with beer league dangler extraordinaire, Mike Dowda.
In March, I had a pop-up show at Ski Barre in Jackson…
My show hit the Jackson Hole News & Guide…
While waiting for baby Esser to arrive, I took the girls for many afternoon snowball-throwin’ outings.
Mom and Dad arrived to help out with…
Our now family of five!
Doctor Ariano rolled through with some sweet, sweet cigars. Jackson mildly approved.
One of the pieces showcased during the Soiree? A view from Four Seasons Jackson Hole… this piece paved the way for a much larger engagement in Teton Village.
Oh yes, and I did paint this same view in 2015… could a new Guggenheim series be in the works?
Kelsey and Madison arrived to help us with Esser.
The girls took to their brother instantly…
Vega and Coraline got into art bigly this year… we had many studio sessions.
Howdy Stranger this iconic sign, which once sat at the airport exit, and currently resides atop Teton Pass… was buried by snow and replaced in 2017.
There I was, partying on Mulholland Drive at an attorneys home, when a pair of famous brothers crashed, shirtless, whooping and snagging liquor. In other words? I enjoy Los Angeles… and, finally found the time to pay my respects to the Hollywood Sign… in neon.
Getting my LA on with Zogblog.
Vegas baby! I made my way back to the promise land for a five day, solo painting adventure. This time, I painted Atomic Liquors, on Fremont Street.
One of the greatest neons in the world…
I even got to catch up with JP, grab some steaks at the Four Queens and talk life.
So taken by Atomic, I created a 3 by 5 foot version in the studio… all the while, plotting and planning another Vegas tour for 2018.
The studio gained a carpet… and some guy, acting like The Dude.
Our dear friends, The Birawers, joined us in Victor for some nature…
Here is Michael, climbing Mount Glory… his work is AMAZING, and he just opened a gallery in Seattle.
The 4th was magical in Idaho…
My man Michael, a dear friend and collector, joined us…
The fireworks were beautiful in the back yard.
The sunsets simply do not quit in Teton Valley.
Oh baby, I painted a Jackalope! This painting would become a focal point of the year…
Even the press took note.
I climbed Glory many times this summer, here is Ryan defying gravity (as usual).
My folks joined us to meet Esser and help out with the life of five (something they are quite familiar with). Dad smashed an 88 at The Links!
The best family shot we could nab (thank you Deb).
Coraline turned 4, and celebrated at Music on Main…
During Leadercast Jackson Hole, I guided the creation of a 9 by 5 foot mural… fittingly, I took a snap with Scott Fitzgerald to celebrate ala Silicon Couloir.
I spent twelve straight weeks painting at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole as their Artist-In-Residence. You can peep that body of work here… as Arny says, I’ll be back. I had a blast working with the crew… thank you Dan and Nina for making it happen.
The Center For The Arts celebrated 10 years with a Lyle Lovett concert and a Borbay live painting.
Dan and Tim got to meet Esser at five months!
We are terrible at golf (at least me and Tim are) but that didn’t stop us from crushing some brews.
Tim will always be my spuddy. Ha.
He also scaled Glory in a respectable 46 minutes.
The Jackalope won the 2017 Spirit of Wyoming contest… and will now be the Jackson Hole Stillworks Highwater Vodka label for a year! Here’s a backstory of my life and times out West…
Alan and Tricia took won the Jackalope… pictured here at the release party with my other team, Chas, Trav and Nikki of Jackson Hole Stillworks!
We even ran into Tricia on our date night, atop Jackson Hole.
I joined Travis and Chas for a charity golf tournament. The best Kung fu is terrible golf.
For the second straight year, I live painted at the Teton Valley Hospital Foundation summer event… the She Shed found a beautiful home and raised beautiful lucre.
The return of Twin Peaks was a big deal… I celebrated with a neon version of the Welcome sign.
We spent our summer finding beautiful places to experience nature as a family.
Erin took time out of her busy schedule to make this vintage truck look good.
Ryan took me on a twelve mile hike, from Teton Pass to Teton Village. 12 miles of burly mountain ridges… we finished off the day with a sloshie.
Each year, I donate/create many works of art. This piece, Snake and Jake’s Meets Cutty’s, was created and auctioned by yours truly to benefit two great causes alongside Jackson Hole Food & Wine.
Marking year nine of my 20-year-Guggenheim series, I created this bad boy in a Wyoming context, live-painting the Eclipse atop Jackson Hole. Word on the street was this Lebron, Zuckerberg and Leo were at the same party, but I was too focused on my work to notice.
Homeboy’s eclipse game was on point.
I took the Eclipse and ran with it… this YOLO bowl auctioned at The Center For The Arts to benefit Community Entry Services.
MH the Verb dropped Afronaut… I painted the cover! The creative juice was flowing on this painting…
My beauties in a field of wheat, rippling wheat.
While I admittedly suck at golf, I did drive one 310 yards (with witnesses) and broke 100 three times (from the whites). It doesn’t hurt to have the gorgeous out back.
Oh baby, those sunsets!
For the co-ed tourney in Jackson, we had a NYC team reunion… Miles and Jessica joined us from Denver, and Ed lives out West with me… we played on Check Republic together in Central Park!
For two years running, the Teton Valley Ice Demons were winless, but we looked great.
I returned to Boston for the first time since college (which, at 37, now feels like an eternity) to pay respects to my late coach, Bruce Lehane. While there, I took some time to paint the Citgo Sign en plein air.
Paul William, my ol’ college roommate, joined me for paint and pints. Many pints.
Snow in September? Yes.
Esser and Erin, enjoying the three minutes of fall we had this year.
A morning stroll on the golf course…. waterfalls abound.
A calm moment with my little ladies.
Dance in the sun girls!
This year, the girls began to assert their occasional displeasure with Daddy-O.
And I finally dropped my large-scale Bob Marley painting!
Amma and Boppa joined-us to spend time with Esser, and help us with the kiddos.
Boppa and Esser caught some laughs.
Ryan took me to Thanksgiving Bowl… I rocked the snow shoes up and down… we had whiskey, cider and this corgi took the big plunge.
I collaborated with SpringHill Suites in Jackson Hole to create this collaborative mural.
Coraline’s first time on skates, ever! She is a natural.
We also stopped by the Teton Raptor Center… very cool place, it really is the who’s hoo of Jackson Hole.
My final release of 2017? A local Teton Valley landmark… The Rammell Barn… which marks the beginning of a very exciting engagement… which I will formally announce in January.
Here is a big, huge thank you to my family, friends, collectors, teammates and community for an epic year! Love you all.
