Introducing my collage painting of the legend — Bob Marley.

Watch the entire piece come together in a hot minute, soundtrack courtesy of a legend in the making — MH the Verb.
This piece began with a series of collaged shapes… each exploring a spectrum of events, songs, people and dates significant to Bob’s life.
Always with the warm underpainting… always.
Nothing beats adding the first round of shadows, identifying the primary form and beginning to discover a likeness. The orange gradient in the background seemed appropriate.
The first layer of the painting was created with a range of blues… the mood of the painting is cool.
I went into the shirt several times, trying to find the right color/collage balance. The purple was interesting, but missed the mark.
To breath life into Bob, I began working, again, from shadows to highlights… with some warmer hues. I also simplified the shirt, gave it a lighter feel.
With the sun striking Bob’s face with warmth, all that remained was warming up the hair.
And boom! Bob Marley.
Here is Bob, in context, in our living room.
And outside in direct sunlight.
And once again, in the living room, with Vega doing some climbing in the background.
