If you find yourself in Jackson, be sure to visit the Mormon Row Historic District — it’s spectacular! The John Moulton ranch features this incredible pink house with views you can’t buy (literally, it’s historically preserved). So, you see, I had to paint it.

Here is the entire process with a voice over by yours truly. I channeled the Micromachine man. Remember that guy?

The source image for this painting was taken in late 2015, when life was super easy with only two kids.

Mental preparation starts with a Pako’s at The Handle Bar. Here, I ate a pretzel, thought about the painting I was going to create, and savored a moment.

Set-up with a black, primed canvas, no sketch… mysterious.

So I began with a quick, extremely crude white paint-pen sketch. From there, I blasted a gradient in the sky with three tones of blue… which, in hand, became six… and then a small galaxy.

A wide shot of the action. Pro Tip: don’t drink the paint water.

But do drink the excellent cocktails prepared by Blake at the Ascent Lounge bar…

Back to work! Banged out two green tones into the foreground, did some paint drawing, and added the pink highlights.

What I love about session paintings is the pace — less think, more paint. The mid-to-foreground greens took on a life of their own… so, I let them run free and wild, merely guiding their journey while the Predators pounded the Penguins.

A far shot… you’ll notice I established a three-tone set of Tetons, along with the darker side of the house. I used orange.

As a David Lynch fan, I can’t help but wonder if the see-through roof was more interesting? Still, I felt like painting shingles, so I took the risk.

Hell, two trees and this baby is done!

You can judge me by the company I keep… in this case, a (very) temporary showing next to Giacometti.

And here it is… “The Pink House”, 20″X20″, acrylic on canvas. You can buy it… until it sells. What shall I paint this Saturday?
Oh yes, and here is the neon action from session one…
