Last night, I hit up Sidewalk Cafe to live paint “BalloonUP presents THE SPIN”. Taking images sent in advance, I created a living collage of the action.
Hosted by the ever charismatic MH the Verb, there were performances by Watermelon, Kuf Knotz, Kwame Darko, Drusef, Archie Green, Jack Wilson, K.Renee, SoHo Kings, iCON the Mic King and… House DJs : B-Tips & LongArms.
Here’s MH getting things started. Dude’s a banker by day, if you saw him perform and then ran into him in a suit, you’d be like, no way this is the same guy. It is.
Nothing beats a crude sketch on a black gessoed canvas. OK, sex, a cold beer on a hot summer day, a great book… but still.
Beginning to lay out the action… some of the figures came from an Arthur Pollock book of photography (great snaps, heavy Boston influence, where I went to school). You’ll also notice the Good Doctor, courtesy of Ralph Steadman.
As the performance builds, so too does the painting. I actually forgot a palette knife, but decided to paint with just black and white anyway.
Almost there… I really just posted this one because I like the energy of the scene.
Bam! 16″X20″, created live, on the scene, of the scene. Here are some other paintings I’ve created live… oh, and if this is your first trip to Borbay.com — check my full gallery.
