When good ol’ Ari Lankin offered up a ride to Long Beach, I thought to myself, “yes, I would like to paint on the beach today.” A few minor roadside issues later, we were en route to the Smithtown High School relocation district. It was a fantastically sunny day, and my immediate inclination was to go ass to the ocean and paint some bungalows. After the jump, some wonderful photos by our friend Jaquen. Beware, there is a NSFW topless shot of yours truly.
A 24″X30″ is aggressive for a true plein air, so I took out the big brush to start with big marks. The acrylic is being diluted by gel medium.
So colorful, right? Time for my board shorts to start painting building panels.
Two buildings laid out. Me adjusting my glasses. People sunning. One guy came up to Ari and said they hadn’t seen anyone paint on the beach in the ten years they lived there. Old is new.
Salmon colored buildings are so hot right now.
Getting in there with the darks, one of my favorite things to do, as you all know.
Playing around with my fingers, getting a nice swirly sky in there. When doing a plein air, you have to decide when to capture the light across the canvas, and just hope it stays cohesive.
Sucking it in, getting the “trying to be thin” double chin. As you can see, the sky is pretty well defined at this point.
Starting to draw in the grass, which, no joke, some guy ripped out of the ground, rolled and tried to smoke while we were set up. OK, that was false, but could you imagine?
Painting sand, painting stick fence posts. A typical day at the office.Long Beach Bungalow Painting by Borbay
Done! This painting, when on the wall, screams “beach!” and “vacation!” like you wouldn’t believe. This painting is on consignment in Manhattan, and is available for acquisition. For pricing and details — drop me a line.
Bungalows against Bungalows.
A perfect seaside gallery.
Looks like I missed an amazing day. The paintings looks great.

Your mom and I were en plein air ourselves, in the garden with the kittens, in Portland OR, following you on Twitter. We watched your progress and felt like we were on the beach on the East coast with you. Being on the West Coast and East Coast simultaneously was interesting….nice
