I had the honor of painting this view from the Four Seasons Jackson Hole, as their Artist-In-Residence. The canvas itself is 10″X20″. The medium? Acrylic.
Here is a photograph of the scene, featuring the Teewinot, the mountain and, of course, lots of snow.
If you’d like to see the entire painting process captured in time-lapse, watch this video. The soundtrack was provided by new friend, local musician Casey Stout… her beautiful rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” set’s the perfect snowy serenade.
Before I began the painting, I took a moment to sip a beer and take in the view on Thanksgiving. If you make it to Teton Village, get over to The Handle Bar — their Handle Burger is to die for, and they have fantastic specials. Order a Pako’s. Tell José, Borbay sent you.
A luscious set-up, no doubt.
Kicking things off with a quick drawing in pencil to lay out the major elements. As always, the sky is under-painted orange. Complementary, my dear Watson.
Ah yes… the entire canvas, nearly covered with the initial layer. The warmth always finds its way to the final surface, even when it’s covered several times.
Wrapping-up day one with a photograph outside for context. Incredible light changes daily, when surrounded by mountains and snow.
That blue sky gradient, and a smattering of snow to define some roof-tops.
Ah yes, a fairly huge leap in progress… I painted the mountains from dark-to-light, beginning with the trees… then the shadows, followed by the snow.
Defining the rock-wall on the right side of the foreground as well as the buildings in the background, and the windows in the Teewinot. The idea was to work the canvas from back-to-front several times, until completion.
The entire surface of this painting was created with a size 1 or size 0 brush, so it took quite a bit of time to develop each area. My next order of business was to populate the mid-ground with trees.
And lo, I was joined by Jackson Hole’s artistic sensation Amy Ringholz, who worked on some stellar animal drawings. It was the day after the major library event, so she ran into approximately 1,000 people she knew. Shout to Rhenda Saporito for finally getting us in touch.
Never travel without your entourage… here, my three gorgeous ladies bringing the good cheer and a much needed cup of black coffee.
Combing the snow in purple hues… painting the rocks, adding the tram and gondola… very close now.
Completed! It was an honor to create this 10″X20″ acrylic on canvas painting as the Four Seasons Jackson Hole’s Artist-In-Residence. A big thank you to Nina Braga for making this happen.
