I’m honored to present a new painting of the late, beloved Wheaton Terrier — Jagger.
The work was based on this source image of Jagger, hanging out at home, with her head tilted to the side and eyes full of love.

You can view the entire creation process in 90 seconds by clicking on the video above. Before we move on to the photographic recap, I’d like to give a special shout to Pete Pidgeon and Arcoda for the absolutely perfect soundtrack.
Beginning with a basic outline to establish the composition, and delineate the collage areas.
Following a careful selection process, the headlines and images were trimmed and pasted to the canvas.
Per usual, I went with a warm, orange under-painting for both the background, and Jagger herself.
Up next? A deep, teal wash over the images…
From there, it was time to dive in… as with a human portrait, I went with the eyes, nose and mouth first… establishing the visual identifiers early on.
Working from dark-to-light… this is one of those stages where the canvas feels really busy… here, I rely on the process and focus on carefully painting each shape.
Just about finished with a full-cycle of colors on Jagger.
I revised the collage, removing some color, allowing the images to pop. While they would eventually be repainted, I wanted to develop a greater depth of field in the final layers.
Painting the background at this stage was critical in identifying the final tones for both Jagger and the photo collage.
The secondary wash applied, I dove back into Jagger, once again beginning with the shadows.
Cycling through the mid-tones, I went for a bold, teal/orange combination largely inspired by the background. It felt right, so I moved on to the highlights.
After a full second round of colors, Jagger came together. I’m grateful for the opportunity to memorialize this important member of the family, thank you Gary, I hope everyone loves this painting.
