“California, tell your people to stay away. Stay away now, don’t – don’t come in here. Whatever you hear, stay away! John Doe has the upper hand!” And with this, we steel ourselves for the climax.
I’ve always admired Detective Somerset, as masterfully played by Morgan Freeman, in the spectacular movie Se7en. His rapport with a cocky Brad Pitt is perfect… the Odd Couple meets CSI.
Can you guess the scene?
While the message was unintentional, I later realized the proximity of the words “monster” and “wood” could arouse some suspicion. Overall, these headlines and collage elements explore the dark side of life in what I assumed was Detroit, but is in fact a fictional Midwestern city, assumed to be somewhere in Nebraska.
Quickly nailing down the facial characteristics through shadow, while liberally adding shades of orange.
Solidifying… the spiral staircase on his tie is very much a visual representation for Mills.
Eye see you — watched horror movies while painting up to this point…
Getting into the facial tones… starting to bring things together.
The highlight on his forehead was all wrong, something I decided to add to my ‘to-do’ list. On his right shoulder, there is an image of a man dying from AIDS (not drugs, but looks similar to the victim in the movie), a stormy painting, a Pollock (which would later get painted out), 8 demon faces (7 remain) and several instruments of torture for good measure.
Into the jacket we go… in retrospect, this probably could have sufficed for the outer layer, but something wasn’t feeling right, so I decided to push it further.
Greys.
Decided to heat up the temperature on the outer layer, here, it started to look a bit busy.
At this stage, I knew the jacket had too much business, so I had to simplify…
A darker shirt and a calmer jacket… and here he is: Detective Morgan Somerset.
