It’s gotten to the point where the Minnesotans in my life, insist I bring snow to Minneapolis. Now, if you know anything about the climate in Minnesota, this is quite the powerful statement. Well, true to form, we arrived Friday for the Arbit wedding, and no sooner did we put our bags down, did the snow begin to fall.
Sure enough, snow wasn’t the only thing to fall. The Metrodome, weighed down by snow and Brett Favre scandal, collapsed. This incident proved to foreshadow the Viking’s effort against the New York Giants, two days later, in Detroit. Yes, Detroit.
Getting things started with some collaged photos from The Star Tribune, Pioneer Press and one shot from USA Today.
Now, with the surface fully collaged, I made the decision to take a different route… something more linear.
As you can see, I was working on this during different times of the day, so the lighting varied greatly. The painting began with some hand drawn lines in deep burgundy and cadmium red.
A primary triad of red, yellow, blue has been completed.
Beginning to explore some more colors, painting in the headlines in the upper left hand quadrant of the canvas in my standard manner.
Belting out a large “METRODOME” at the top of the picture… striving for balance in chaos.
Another hand-drawn Dome, bringing the total to five, five Metrodomes, ha, ha, ha.
Adding white, making connections between objects to create continuous contour lines.
Getting close, lots of new colors, several tones of blues added.
And, my homage to the Collapse of the Metrodome is complete. Since I am getting married in Minnesota, to a Minnesotan, with a family of Minnesota fans, here’s hoping the Vikings don’t get “North Star’d”… if you know what I mean. This picture joins my growing portfolio of Minny-Apple (yes, I said it) paintings, including The Spoonbridge and Cherry, Minnetonka Flowers, First Avenue and most recently, The Depot.
